Talk: Mechanisms of Marginalization: LGBTIQ+ Identities, Generative AI, and the Question of Visibility

This talk introduces the fundamentals of generative AI and explains how training data and design decisions shape AI behavior. It then explores how LGBTIQ+ identities are represented in these systems, highlighting three mechanisms of marginalization: invisibility, where identities are omitted; misvisibility, where they are represented inaccurately or through stereotypes; and visibility as vulnerability, where representation itself can create new risks. Through accessible examples from large language models and other AI systems, the talk illustrates the complexity of LGBTIQ+ identity representation in generative AI.
Speaker: Anne Lauscher is Professor of Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence at the University of Hamburg, where her research group investigates Conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems with a focus on fair, inclusive, and sustainable communication. The professorship is funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German federation and the federal states.

Zahlreiche Studien zeigen, dass KI-Systeme systematische Verzerrungen aufweisen können, etwa entlang von Geschlecht, Herkunft, Sprache, sexueller Orientierung oder sozialem Status. Solche Bias-Effekte sind kein rein technisches Problem fehlerhafter Algorithmen. Sie erzählen auch etwas über unsere Gesellschaft: über Ungleichheiten, die in Daten, Modellen sowie in Entwicklungs- und Nutzungskontexten sichtbar werden.
Im Vortrag geht es darum, wie Bias in KI-Systemen entsteht, welche technischen Mechanismen dahinterstehen und welche gesellschaftlichen Folgen daraus entstehen können. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf Fragen von Repräsentation, Diskriminierung und queeren Perspektiven.
