Airbus - Optimize composite DorsalFin for Ku- and Ka-Band transparency (10-40GHz) and ensure, that structure meets static requirements

AIRBUS, Manufacturer of commercial aircrafts.

Initial situation

SatCom antenna is mounted in separate cover on top of fuselage and in front of VTP/ DorsalFin.

Problem

Changed SatCom antenna type should be installed into DorsalFin to erase separate SatCom cover. Actual DorsalFin has insufficient radar transparency (this is starting point).

Aims of the project

Develop radar transparent layup, check all DorsalFin areas for sufficient static strength.

Scopes

  • Design studies for installation incl. dimensioning
  • material and layup definition for (actual) Glass-fibre-PrePreg-parts in sandwich technology
  • analytical and finite-element-calculations
