Wi-Fi / Wireless Service of TUHH

The Computer Center provides the two wireless networks VPN/WEB and eduroam for research and teaching. The VPN/WEB is primarily used to set up eduroam, which is available at many other university institutions (map). eduroam is a portmanteau of the two words education and roaming.

Wi-Fi Change

At the turn of the year 2023/24, the certificate chain required for the secure authentication of all TUHH accounts when using eduroam will change. Therefore, a reinstallation/reconfiguration of all clients is necessary so that they recognize the new certificate chain as valid and can successfully connect in the future. The easiest way to do this is to use the installation programs at https://cat.eduroam.org.

The new certificate chain is based on the "DFN-Verein Community Root CA 2022" and the associated root certificate is usually not present on the clients (without anchoring in the browser or operating system) but is installed by the eduroam installation program.

The differentiation of the presented certificate chain depends on the external identity during authentication. When using the external identity "anonymous@tuhh.de", the certificate chain with the root certificate "T-TeleSec GlobalRoot Class 2" is still presented. When using the external identity "eduroam@tuhh.de", the new certificate chain is delivered with the root certificate "DFN-Verein Community Root CA 2022". See also: https://doku.tid.dfn.de/de:dfnpki:dfnpki_root_certs

We will gradually ask all users to switch to the new certificate chain by mail in the coming months.

Certificates with browser and operating system anchoring are now subject to constraints and create risks that could endanger the eduroam service even in the short term. We hope that this change will also increase operational security in the long term.
