Research in African contexts has shown the yet underutilized potential of Organic Municipal Waste composting. For Côte d’Ivoire, pilot initiatives have shown feasibility and acceptance of biowaste composting, if the stakeholders are involved. This project aims at establishing a sustainable biowaste composting system in Tiassale. The focus is on the whole composting chain, from households’ organic waste collection and other locations to the processing facility and up to compost application possibilities in local agriculture. Waste type assessment, physico-chemical analysis and mass flow measurements will help to characterize the raw waste materials available. Investigations involving evaluation of suitable substrate mixes, running of composting windrows, temperature profile determination, germination test and pathogen survival control will assess the microbial disinfection capacity of biowastecomposting. Human health risks linked to potential applications of the compost will be assessed through analysis of heavy metal content. Characterization of compost from the windrows regarding the properties required for agriculture and establishment of a system of compost quality control and declaration with respective application guidelines will help to analyze its application possibilities in agriculture. Socio-economic sustainability will be obtained through a secured system for waste collection and composting and the development of a sustainable financing system for the whole composting system.
