E-gnition

Development of a Temperature-Controlled Climate Chamber for Li-Ion Battery Cell Testing

Description of the company

e-gnition Hamburg is the Formula Student team of the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH). The team consists of more than 70 students who design, develop, and manufacture a fully electric race car each year. The vehicle competes in international competitions across various countries, where performance, and engineering designs are evaluated.

Situation

The performance and reliability of an electric race car strongly depend on the behavior of its battery cells. Lithium-ion cells are highly temperature-dependent, which directly affects internal resistance, capacity, voltage behavior, and overall efficiency. Currently, tests are not always performed under strictly controlled thermal conditions, which limits the accuracy and comparability of the results.

Problem

Without a controlled temperature environment, measurement results can vary and are difficult to reproduce. This makes it challenging to precisely analyze temperature effects and to optimally design the battery and energy management system. In addition, uncontrolled testing conditions can increase safety risks when working with Li-ion cells.

Aims of the project

The aim of this project is to design and build a temperature-controlled climate chamber for systematic battery cell testing. The chamber will allow key parameters such as internal resistance, capacity, voltage under load, efficiency, and losses to be measured at defined temperatures. The generated data will support the optimization of the battery system in the race car.

Scopes

The project includes defining technical and safety requirements, designing the chamber, and integrating heating, cooling, and measurement systems. An electronic load and data acquisition system will be implemented to enable standardized testing. The project also covers safety measures, validation of results, and full documentation.
