Aging workforce is one of the most challenging topics in German industry in the next 10 years. This is true for the aerospace industry as well. Due to Corona crisis onboarding of new people is at least postponed. The project presented here supports the evaluation of AR as means to capture knowledge and make it accessible in mixed reality.
LHT was looking urgently for new people to hire in the beginning of 2020. For a quick onboarding of new people, plans for using VR and AR based education were made. But then Corona crisis hit the aerospace industry very hard, so no recruitment took place actually. Nevertheless many key knowledge carriers are members of the baby boomer generation and will retire in the next 5 to 10 years. Their invaluable knowledge has to be captured and should be made available in an accessible way.
Aims of the project
In this project the use of AR based knowledge capturing and applicability for onboarding should be evaluated in multiple dimensions. Furthermore an existing open source framework for creation of VR based trainings should be adapted, so it can be used for AR as well. Note: the AR based trainings shall be conducted with Microsoft Hololens 2 devices as the target environment.
Analyze AR based solutions for knowledge capturing and training creation available on the market in several dimension
Investigate and adapt a open source framework for VR training creation to AR
Identify feasible types of training and conditions for successful implementation
Design a sample training for an industrial context, e.g. familiarization with a complex industrial equipment
Target group (students)
For this project, we are looking for highly motivated students in computer science, engineering and production technology. Experience in programming for Augmented Reality applications with Unity 3D and in Microsoft MRTK is a plus. This project is for you if you are interested in agile work and if you have fun in shaping the future of industrial education.
