Climate change, environmental protection and increasing global demand for resources - the world is facing major challenges that need to be overcome. Universities are ideal places for this, as many technologies are researched and developed here and at the same time the responsible minds of tomorrow are trained. The German Rectors' Conference therefore describes universities and their role in a sustainable transformation as "future workshops of society". In order to give as many young people as possible the opportunity to understand the potential of green technologies in relation to a sustainable future and to actively shape it themselves later on, the new cross-university learning platform SDG-Campus was developed at the Institute of Technical Education and University Didactics at TU Hamburg under the direction of Prof Sönke Knutzen.

Sustainability and technology

From the summer semester 2023, students will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of individual technological solutions for a sustainable future. The course content is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, such as affordable and clean energy supply, sustainable urban development and sustainable production. The learning opportunities have different levels. In addition to an overarching introductory course on sustainability and technology, there are three different types of programmes: Fundamentals, in-depth and later explorative forms of learning in which students try out new technologies in teams. Six other renowned universities, including TU Munich, RWTH Aachen University and Bauhaus University Weimar, are cooperating to offer attractive learning content on the various topics. All courses, which are aimed in particular at Bachelor students of all subjects, are created by the lecturers at the universities themselves. This means that current research findings are directly incorporated and students at the partner universities benefit from this. Students who successfully complete a major learning pathway can receive a certificate (microdegree).
