Description of the company

MicroHarvest is a fast-growing startup based in Hamburg, Germany, specializing in the
production of sustainable proteins from microorganisms. Through the development of these
environmentally friendly protein sources, MicroHarvest is positioning itself as a pioneer in
addressing the world's food challenges by providing a sustainable and innovative solution
that actively contributes to improving global food security.

Problem

Lab Scale Bioreactors require fine control of their contents, what components are added,
and what is taken out. The unique process used by MicroHarvest, requires specific controls
not catered to commercially.

Aims of the project

The project's primary aim is to design and implement a real-time mass-flow-balance system.
This system will be capable of monitoring a fermentation processes in regard to components
as they are added and removed from the system. The project will involve real-world
application of hardware and software development.

Scopes

1. Literature Review and Technology Selection

• Research and evaluate the latest control hardware and software solutions
• Balance user and developer experience with robustness and usability
• Analysis of safety measures and appropriate responses.

2. Design and Evaluation

• Custom hardware and software will be designed and adapted to equipment in the
• laboratory
• Simulations will be used to confirm robustness of design

3. Implementation

• The final prototype will be produced and implemented into laboratory trials
• Real-world testing and stress testing can be performed and improvements made when and
• where possible

Target group (students)

• Computer Science: Students with a strong foundation in programming, software development, and system integration.
• Electrical and Mechatronic Engineering: Students interested in the practical application of electronics in computing systems, including the integration of Raspberry Pi, Arduino and PLC technologies.
