Artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming universities: It is changing job profiles, opening up new possibilities in teaching, and challenging established examination formats. The Hamburg University of Technology is actively addressing this development and systematically focusing on AI - as a goal for professional development, as a tool, and as an institutional mission.
As part of the initial “AI in Education” project, seven specialized working groups (WGs) are working to shape the responsible, efficient, and innovative use of AI in academic studies, teaching, and administration. The project will run for seven months and is intended to lay the groundwork for a systematic and institutional AI strategy at TUHH.
Key Areas
WG 1 – Framework Conditions for AI
Development of guidelines, standards, and governance structures for the responsible use of AI at TUHH - including ethical, legal, and technical principles.
WG 2 – Architecture & Technical Platform
Design and operation of the technical infrastructure on which TUHH’s AI services run - scalable, compliant with data protection regulations, and flexible for various use cases.
WG 3 – AI Agents for Administration
Development of AI-based agents that support or automate administrative processes - such as for licensing, consulting, or internal operations.
WG4 – Cool Tools for Teaching Staff
Integration of AI tools that support instructors in preparing, conducting, and evaluating their courses.
WG 5 – Learning Booster for Students
Development of AI-powered learning tools to provide individualized support for students, as well as for quality assurance and reflection on the use of personalized learning assistants.
WG 6 – Empowerment & Stakeholders
Involvement of all relevant stakeholders through surveys, communication initiatives, training programs, and dialogue with external partners from academia, business, and politics.
Goal
The initial project will result in defined AI functions, a clear picture of the needs of all stakeholder groups, and initial pilot projects that pave the way for a broadly supported AI strategy at TUHH. Progress on the project is reported regularly to the Vice President for Education; and milestones are presented to the TUHH University Board.
