After your arrival, make sure to complete your enrollment at TUHH by submitting all necessary documents on time. This includes proof of TUHH admissions document, your passport, and payment of semester fees as well as further documents.

We organize a variety of orientation sessions and Welcome Week activities to introduce you to TUHH, the city of Hamburg, and fellow students. These events provide valuable information on academic life, cultural adjustment, and useful contacts.

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. International students usually need to obtain either statutory or private health insurance coverage. You can get information and guidance on how to secure insurance and information about local healthcare providers at the Department STUDIS/StudierendenService Registration adn Admission

Registering your residence with the local immigration office is mandatory shortly after your arrival. Learn about the application process, required documents, and how to extend or renew your visa or residence permit to stay legally in Germany during your studies. Opening a Bank Account A German bank account is essential for managing finances such as paying rent, receiving scholarships or salary, and paying semester fees.

Hamburg has an excellent public transportation system including buses, trains, and ferries. TUHH students receive a semester ticket that allows free use of public transport within Hamburg. We provide information on how to obtain and use your ticket, as well as tips for getting around the city. 

Please visit as well the HVV portal to find information about public transportation, schedules, and tickets in Hamburg. The HVV portal provides all the necessary details to help you plan your mobility efficiently during your studies and everyday life.

Take advantage of TUHH’s student services including counseling, language courses, IT support, libraries, and sports facilities. These resources are designed to support your academic success and well-being during your studies. 

Engage with various student groups, clubs, and cultural events offered at TUHH and in Hamburg. Participating in these activities is a great way to build friendships, improve your language skills, and experience life in Germany beyond the classroom.

Welcome@TUHH Programm:  The program offers a variety of events, excursions, and intercultural activities that help students connect socially and integrate culturally into university and city life. Through meet-ups, themed evenings, and communication workshops, students build networks and develop intercultural skills essential for their studies and personal growth.

Many international students work part-time or complete internships to gain experience and support themselves financially. Understand the legal regulations regarding working hours and permits, as well as useful resources for job hunting.

Improve your German and other language skills through a variety of courses offered at TUHH or by external providers. Language proficiency will help you both academically and socially during your stay. 

Familiarize yourself with emergency numbers such as police (110), fire department, and medical emergency services (112) in Germany. Additionally, find advice on staying safe while living and studying in Hamburg.

Take advantage of academic support services including workshops on scientific writing, time management, exam preparation, and mentoring programs to help you succeed in your studies.

Check the workshop-offers of the Student Couselling Centre TUHH which help to acquire key qualifications that are especially relevant for the core and final phases of your studies, but will also be useful to you in everyday life and in your future professional career.

Gain insights into cultural norms and expectations in Germany, including communication styles, classroom etiquette, and social customs, making it easier to adapt and integrate. 

University life can be stressful, especially when far from home. Access confidential counseling services and resources for mental health support to help you manage stress and well-being during your studies.
