Description of the company

Danfoss is a global engineering company that develops technologies for cooling, heating, power electronics, industrial automation, and energy-efficient solutions. A strong digital backbone underpins the company's global operations, providing the platforms, data, cybersecurity, and system integration needed to enhance productivity, accelerate engineering processes and support business growth.

Situation

Danfoss is preparing to bring server operations services in-house, moving from a vendor-managed model to a capability owned and controlled by Danfoss IT. The transition focuses on operating systems, backup and related operational services, while vendor continues to manage infrastructure below the operating-system level. The project responds to the need for greater operational control, stronger internal expertise and better cost management.

Problem

Heavy reliance on an external provider limits Danfoss’s operational flexibility and creates cost pressure. Gaps in regional specialist coverage and insufficient internal capacity also create service-continuity risks and restrict project delivery. The transition adds further pressure because the existing team must maintain daily operations while transferring services, training new colleagues and developing automation.

Aims of the project

• Establish internal ownership: Build a Danfoss-owned capability for server operating systems and backup, with clear responsibilities for service delivery and governance.
• Maintain reliable services: Strengthen monitoring, backup and recovery, maintenance, and incident resolution through a controlled transition.
• Develop internal expertise: Use knowledge transfer and recruitment to create sustainable operational capacity and reduce dependence on external providers.
• Improve efficiency and cost control: Standardize processes across data centers and edge sites, and introduce automation where it delivers clear operational and financial value. 

Target group (students)

We are looking for students in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering or related programs, particularly those interested in:

• Server administration and IT infrastructure: Windows Server, Linux, server deployment, monitoring, upgrades and migrations.Prior experience in Terraform and Pulumi is beneficial.
• Automation and infrastructure engineering: Scripting, Terraform, Ansible and automated server provisioning and configuration.
• Security and service resilience: Access management, patching, certificates, backup and recovery.
• IT service management and documentation: Incident analysis, configuration records, technical documentation and knowledge sharing. Prior experience with ITIL would be beneficial
