The Institute of Digital and Autonomous Construction (IDAC) conducts interdisciplinary research in all areas of digitalization in civil engineering and is engaged in the exploration of fundamental informational methods for modern civil and environmental engineering. Application areas include cyber-physical systems, smart sensors/actuators, construction robotics, cognitive building, additive manufacturing, and AI-based Industry 4.0 technologies.

The Institute of Global Water Security at TU Hamburg addresses the critical challenges of water security and climate extremes. We develop advanced stochastic models, climate-informed engineering tools, and open-source datasets to better understand precipitation, floods, droughts, and hydroclimatic risks. By combining scientific innovation with practical applications, we support resilient infrastructure, sustainable resource management, and the next generation of engineers and scientists.

The research activities of the Institute for Building Materials, Building Physics and Building Chemistry focus on the following topics:

The Institute for Structural Analysis conducts basic research in the field of computational methods of non-linear structural mechanics. The scientific work is interdisciplinary and primarily methodically oriented. The focus is on the finite element method, innovative design and simulation methods, stability problems, non-linear dynamics and applications of artificial intelligence in structural mechanics. Associated experimental work completes the research profile.

The main research areas of the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Management are soil mechanics and soil dynamics, numerical simulation of soil using different methods, geotechnics in general and marine geotechnics in particular, as well as numerically supported optimization of construction methods and geotechnical structures. Corresponding research projects are located in areas of basic and applied research.

The Institute of Concrete Structures has been conducting research for a long time on the shear force bearing capacity of reinforced and prestressed concrete components, in particular deck slabs of bridges. More accurate calculation methods are developed on the basis of tests and numerical calculations. Another research focus is numerical modeling as well as stress transfer in concrete cracks.

The objectives of the scientific work at the Institute of Metal and Composite Structures are, on the one hand, early detection and localization of degradation in metal structures through acoustic methods and, on the other hand, tailored development of nano- and microstructured hybrid metals aiming at a delay of degradation and understanding of material mechanisms across length scales. The societal impact is increase of lifetime and operational readiness of metal infrastructure at reduced maintenance costs.

The Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics addresses soil, water and climate related challenges. It focuses on generating new knowledge through research and innovation, developing new measurement tools and prediction methods to gain an accurate understanding of multiphase and multiscale processes occurring near the Earth's surface.

The institute's research activities focus on questions of hydraulic engineering and on questions of the effects of climate change in coastal areas. Emphasis is placed on research on protection against too much water as a result of storm surges, inland flooding and heavy precipitation, and on water management during droughts as protection against too little water. Other focal points include sediment transport and technical solutions for erosion control, as well as the use and development of estuarine areas.

The research topics of the Institute of Water Resources and Water Supply span the entire urban water cycle. They include new methods of water quality assessment, innovative water treatment processes, process modeling and water reuse concepts. The DVGW Research Center TUHH is affiliated with the institute. It contributes practical challenges of drinking water supply such as the effects of climate change, online monitoring and residuals management.
