Are you studying an English-language Master's or Bachelor's degree program at TUHH? Or maybe you're a Ph.D. student eager to deepen your German language skills in specific subject areas? Then you've come to the right place!

Every semester, the TUHH offers semester-long German courses for international students in international degree programs at different levels with our partner IBH.

The successful attendance of at least one course is a prerequisite for students in the English-language degree programs to graduate!

The German language courses are fully booked, and registration is now closed.

Course programme and dates

In cooperation with IBH, the TUHH offers German courses at various levels for international students on English-language degree programmes during the semester.

The courses are free of charge for TUHH students and take place on Wednesdays from 3 to 6.15 pm during lecture periods.

We also offer thematic courses that prepare students for their career entry, job search and the job market in German-speaking countries. These courses are also open to Ph.D. students.

Thematic courses in winter semester 2025/26:

    Wednesdays, 3 - 6.15 pm. (TUHH)
Previous knowledge of German at level B1 is required.
Previous knowledge of German at level B1 is required.
    Wednesdays 3 - 6.15 pm (TUHH)
Previous knowledge of German at level B2 is required.
    Thursdays, 6 - 9.15 pm. (online)

Credit points and recognition

Students enrolled in English-taught degree programs are required to obtain 4 credits from a German language course offered in cooperation with IBH, as specified in the respective examination regulations. Students who have already passed a recognized German language examination (see Annex 1 of the study regulations) are exempt from this requirement.

The remaining 2 credits for the non-technical mandatory course module may be selected from the NTA course offering at the TUHH. Language courses other than German cannot be credited.

Upon successful completion of the mandatory German course, students may take an additional German course at TUHH for 2 credits. This course can only be counted as a non-technical elective if it is taken at a higher proficiency level than the mandatory course.

Thematic German courses cannot be recognized as a second German language course within the NTA module. Students who have already obtained credits from a thematic German course are not eligible to earn further credits by taking an additional German course.

The IBH German courses are not graded.

Further detailed information on the recognition of language courses can be found here.

Exam Registration

If you wish to take an examination in order to acquire credit points, you must register for this examination in TUNE. No credit points can be gained without registering for an exam. Exam registration takes place exclusively during a two-week period. The registration period will be announced in good time. During this period, you can register for your exams in TUNE under My studies > Planner of studies with Module plan. You can find detailed instructions here.
