The basic human needs for clean drinking water, food, energy and health can only be met with the help of chemical engineering and biotechnology. They make biology, chemistry and physics useful to society by enabling large-scale production of food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, fuels, building materials, metals and plastics. Thus, chemical and bioengineering also bears a great responsibility for a resource-conserving and climate-friendly society. After all, a circular economy with a minimal ecological footprint can only be achieved through efficient material conversion processes with extensive recycling possibilities.

As a bio- and chemical engineer, you make targeted use of the properties of raw materials and develop (bio-)catalysts and processes to achieve new products or realize more sustainable, energy-saving ways to existing products. Chemical, biological, mechanical and physical principles play a major role here.

What characterizes this study program?

Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering is the right study program for you if you are curious and eager to experiment and contribute to a sustainable future. Chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and computer science interest you and you are looking forward to being part of an interdisciplinary team. You want a degree with which you can later competently support high-performance teams of engineers and lead them to success.

The goal of the program is to train engineers who are able to develop raw materials and energies into our everyday products, such as medicines, food, cosmetics, plastics, building materials or fuels, in the most resource- and climate-friendly way possible. They make targeted use of the properties of raw materials and develop (bio)catalysts and processes to arrive at new products or realize more sustainable, energy-saving ways to existing products using chemical, biological, mechanical and physical principles.

At TU Hamburg, you have the opportunity to work a lot in small teams. During various internships, you can gain your first impressions of scientific research on (bio)process engineering systems and apparatus in the laboratory and pilot plant. In addition to the scientific and technical basics, you will learn a lot about the different methods and equipment to understand and calculate manufacturing processes and (bio)chemical reactions. Chemical and bioengineers are involved in all development steps of a product. Accordingly, processes and equipment for manufacturing products are also developed, designed and built by them.

How is the program structured?

During your studies, you will learn the fundamentals of the natural sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics), engineering (mechanics, measurement technology, construction) and process technology (thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer). In the fourth semester, you can specialize in chemical engineering or bioengineering.

The bioengineering specialization focuses on the areas of technical microbiology, biocatalysis and bioprocess engineering and thus methods of biochemistry, genetics as well as micro-, molecular- and cell biology. You will design biocatalysts and scalable biotechnological processes in which the catalysts can be biotechnologically applied.

The chemical engineering major enables you to recognize and formulate laws that can be used to plan, calculate, design, build, and operate apparatus, machines, and entire production facilities for environmentally sound processes.

In addition to the specialization, students can also choose from our non-technical courses (6 LP), which include language courses, for example.

The bachelor's thesis as the first scientific work is carried out in the specialization in cooperation with research projects and practice partners. The TU Hamburg also has numerous Erasmus-Plus partnerships with European partner universities and supports studying abroad.

What job can I take?

With the bachelor's degree, you acquire your first academic degree that qualifies you for a profession and you become an engineer. You can already start your professional life, e.g. ...

  • in the process industry, such as the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, the food industry or the petrochemical industry, including engineering and planning offi
  • in the field of energy production, supply and disposal technology or in apparatus and plant engineering and construction
  • in biotechnological companies and in microbial diagnostics
  • in quality analysis
  • in research institutes or in public authorities and offices
  • in banks, insurance companies, management consultancies or in the patent system

And of course you can also start a master's degree. With the bachelor's degree program, you are optimally prepared for further master's studies. A seamless transition to subsequent master's programs at the TU Hamburg is possible.

What are the requirements?

For the study in Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering a general university entrance qualification or a comparable degree as well as sufficient knowledge of German is required.

How do I apply?

You can apply annually for the winter semester in the period from June 1, 2022 to July 15, 2022.

For this you need a university entrance qualification (usually a High School Diploma). If this has been acquired abroad, you will need proof of sufficient German language skills.

Can I include a semester abroad?

Both study and internship abroad are possible. These are not included in the curriculum or mandatory. Therefore, it is recommended to pursue these plans, for example, in a consecutive master's program.

Can I study in the dual program?

 

Yes, you can! All Bachelor of Science degree programs at the TU Hamburg can be studied dual. Since 2003, the Technical University of Hamburg has also offered its Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in a dual study variant in cooperation with more than 50 cooperating companies.

The study concept combines complete university studies with professional practice in the engineering field. The students are employed by one of our cooperating companies and, as cohorts across study programs, represent the entire spectrum of engineering sciences.

The program is rounded off by seminars on the development of social skills, so that graduates can face the challenges of the working world in a responsible manner.

How is campus life?

On the clearly arranged and cozy campus you will quickly get to know your new fellow students and in spring and summer numerous seating areas and green spaces invite you to linger together in the fresh air. In an almost familiar atmosphere, we celebrate our summer festival every year in June, where our TU's own beer brewing group "Campusperle" also offers its creations. Where can I find the relevant regulations?

All modalities for admission to the Bachelor's program are regulated in the Statutes on Studies.

The framework conditions for examinations at TUHH are defined by the General Study and Examination Regulations (ASPO) and the Subject-Specific Study and Examination Regulations (FSPO). The Module Handbook describes the concrete design of the modules provided for in the curriculum and their learning objectives. They also provide information on content, recommended prior knowledge and literature for preparation.
