Due to the international orientation of the TUHH, sufficient knowledge of English is indispensable in many areas at the TUHH.

Different language skills in German and/or English are required for some of the Bachelor's degree programmes. Please note the different requirements that must be proven for application or enrollment.
Please note that the TUHH unfortunately does not offer preparatory German or English courses.

*Proof of proficiency in German must be provided by all applicants who cannot provide proof of a German-language university entrance qualification or a university degree in German language from a German University. German nationals who did not obtain their school-leaving qualification at a German-school must also provide proof of German language skills

**Applicants with a university entrance qualification or a first Bachelor's degree from the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, the USA, New Zealand or Canada (except Quebec) do not need proof of English.

*** The TUHH only accepts German certificates that have been issued in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

No admission or enrollment can be granted without the above-mentioned required language certificates.

Therefore, please inform yourself in sufficient time about the language tests on offer and when they take place. Confirmation of registration or participation in a test is not sufficient for application or enrollment.

The following German certificates are also recognised for enrollment in all German language or bilingual Bachelor's degree programmes in addition to the certificates listed above:

  • the "Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF)" with 16 points (no test part under 3) and not older than 2 years
  • the certificate "telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule" not older than two years.
  • a "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH)" pass from a German university with an average DSH-2 grade at least not older than two years
  • a certification or graduation certificate issued by a German "Studienkolleg"; 
  • a degree certificate (of a course of study with German as language of instruction) issued by a German university or university of applied science (Fachhochschule);
  • the "Deutsches Sprachdiplom" (Stage II) awarded by the "Kulturministerkonferenz";
  • the "Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom" awarded by the Goethe Institute;
  • a university entrance qualification gained at a German school abroad or a regular school in the Federal Republic of Germany (German „Abitur“ or „Realschlabschluss“)
  • a completed vocational training of at least 2 years in Germany
  • German nationals with IB who have taught German in the IB

The following English certificates are also recognised for enrolment in the Bachelor's degree programme in Engineering Science in addition to the certificates listed above:

  • TOEFL (score 577 (PB), 90 (IB) or 22 (revised paper-delivered) at least). The TUHH institution code is 8165, a department code is not required. The TOEFL ITP will not be accepted by TUHH.
  • IELTS-Academics (score 6.5 at least);
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English;
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English;
  • "telc English C1";
  • "UNIcert English level III";
  • German higher education entrance qualification from a school from Germany or a German school abroad
  • an International Baccalaureate (IB) from an English-speaking school
  • a university entrance qualification or a first bachelor's degree from the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, the USA, New Zealand or Canada (except Quebec)
  • higher education entrance qualification or a first bachelor's degree from an University in Austria, Switzerland or Liechtenstein
  • a first bachelor's degree from an University from a country of European Union or Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein with a certificate confirming that English was the language of instruction
  • only for students of TUHH:  one of the TUHH's courses of study with German as language of instruction: If you like to change into ES you can prove your English knowledge by attending and finishing the TUHH-C1.2-English course with success.

The following English certificates are also recognised for enrolment in the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science and Data Science in addition to the certificates listed above:

  • a valid TOEFL (score 72 IB). The TUHH instituion code is 8165. A department code is not required. The TOEFL ITP will not be accepted by TUHH.
  • IELTS-Academics (score 5.0 at least)
  • Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)
  • telc English B 2
  • UNIcert English level II
  • German higher education entrance qualification from a school from Germany or a German school abroad
