Erasmus+ Funding

Funding for Erasmus studies (SMS – long-term)

The amount of funding depends on the country in which you are spending your study semester and is based on the cost of living there. Funding amounts may vary from year to year.
The minimum funding period per semester is two full months. The funding period is determined in July of each year and is based on the total number of students selected to study at partner universities, the destination countries and the available project funds.

The monthly grant can be combined with

  • an additional grant for the use of sustainable transport / ‘green travel’
  • an additional grant for students from disadvantaged backgrounds

Group Contry Monthly grant 2025/26; 2026/27
Gruppe 1 Österreich, Belgien, Dänemark, Deutschland, Finnland, Frankreich, Island, Irland, Italien, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Niederlande, Norwegen, Schweden 600 EUR (20 EUR/Tag)

Gruppe 3 Bulgarien, Kroatien, Litauen, Mazedonien, Polen, Rumänien, Serbien, Türkei, Ungarn 540 EUR (18 EUR/Tag)

Duration of funding:

  • In the 2026 project year (Winter 2026/27, Summer 2027), the duration of funding is limited to a maximum of xx days / x months and y days per semester -> to be determined in early July
  • In the 2025 project year (Winter 2025/26, summer semester 2026), the funding period is limited to a maximum of 125 days / 4 months and 5 days per semester.

The calculation is made to the nearest day (daily rate: monthly rate / 30 days). Funding is paid only for days of ‘active study’, i.e. from the first day of lectures until the final examination.

Funding for Erasmus/ECIU short-term mobility (SMS)

The financial support amounts to (for the current project in 2024 and 2025):

    • 5–14 days of travel/stay: €79 per day
    • The basic funding for 5 days of travel amounts to: 5 × €79 = €395
    • Travel allowance (standard or green travel): see table below
    • Any additional travel days for green travel: €79 per day
    • Any additional funding for disadvantaged groups: one-off payment of €100

    Additional funding for ‘green travel’

Since Project 2021, Erasmus+ has been promoting low-emission travel. If you cover at least 50 per cent of your journey to and from the partner university using environmentally friendly modes of transport (train, bus, carpooling, bicycle), you can apply for a travel allowance and, where applicable, additional funding days to cover the longer travel time.

From the 2025/26 winter semester, flat-rate amounts for sustainable travel (‘Green Travel’) will apply in the Erasmus+ programme. The amount of the travel allowance is based on the one-way distance between Hamburg as the point of departure and the destination (as the crow flies):

Distance (km) Standard travel (€) Green Travel (€) Distance to ECIU partner universities
      10-99 28 56
      100-499 211 285 Twente
500-1.999 309 417 Kaunas, Tampere, Dublin, Trento, Barcelona, Linköping, Stavanger, Lodz, INSAs
      2.000-2.999 395 535 Aveiro
      3.000-3.999 580 785
      4.000-7.999 1.188 1.188
      8.000 oder mehr 1.735 1.735

Definition of additional travel days for Green Travel

Under the 2025 project, the following days are granted for Green Travel:

      • 1 day for a journey time of more than 8 hours
      • 2 days for a journey time of more than 16 hours
      • 3 days for a journey time of more than 32 hours

The journey time is calculated door-to-door, i.e. as the time between your place of study (= Hamburg) and the location of the partner university.

Additional support for students fewer opportunities

Students with special needs or who face additional barriers may receive further funding (a monthly amount of €250) in addition to the standard Erasmus grant.
      The target group includes:

      • First-generation university students: parents or primary carers do not hold a university degree
      • Students who are in employment and cannot continue working during their stay abroad (loss of earnings)
      • Students with children who are going abroad with minor children
      • Students with a disability, with a degree of disability of 20 or higher
      • Students with a chronic illness and associated additional costs abroad

Information sheet: Criteria for additional financial support for Erasmus students with fewer opportunities.

For reference: First-generation university student / student with a disability.

      Application for actual costs

Students with children / with a disability / with chronic illnesses and associated additional costs may alternatively submit an application for actual costs to cover expenses of up to €15,000 per semester. It is also possible to receive a grant for a preparatory trip to explore the local conditions.
These options require considerable lead time. Please contact the TUHH Erasmus coordinator at an early stage for advice. Applications must be submitted to the DAAD no later than 2 months before the start of the mobility period.
