Robotics Professor Jana Jost Makes Work Easier for People

The view from the balustrade down into the large hall of the Institute of Logistics Engineering (ITL) in the Harburg inland port is impressive: five robots stand in a row there – all ready, prepared for the command of the boss and her team. Since March 2026, Prof. Jana Jost has been heading the ITL at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). She clearly enjoys presenting her "clever fleet." "MOMA, with its movable arm, can very precisely pick things from the storage shelves, and our ORCA, with its special tires, is particularly good at driving outdoors over uneven terrain," she highlights their individual capabilities. "Our conveyor belt over there, equipped with cameras, can distinguish the crate of non-alcoholic beer from the other drinks, and the orange robot can then fetch it." Sounds like a perfect workplace. But of course, Jana Jost does not let herself be served by the diligent helpers in the hall; instead, she programs, designs, experiments, and researches together with her staff and students on the robots, their capabilities, and their further development.

Passion for Robotics

An ideal progression also for herself. Robotics has engaged her since her studies in Applied Computer Science with a focus on Robotics at TU Dortmund, which she completed in 2021 with a doctorate on the topic “Machine Socialization of Autonomous Mobile Robots.” Contact was established through a project group of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) at the university, where she started in 2011 as a student assistant, became a research associate, and in 2021 took over the department management for Robotics and Cognitive Systems. The position at TU Hamburg then opened up entirely new perspectives: “The outdoor sector with the harbor, aircraft construction, or the Altes Land region is of central importance here. This is a new field for me and was a great incentive. Additionally, this hall and the fact that you develop your own robots here,” the newly appointed professor expresses her enthusiasm for the new challenge. This involves both leading the ITL – currently with about 15 employees, a size comparable to her department at IML – and her new teaching duties. At the start of the first semester break, her conclusion is consistently positive: “The environment here is very open and cooperative; we have an ideal research community including other disciplines.”

Robotics Testing Environment with Industry Partners

Currently, Jana Jost, together with Prof. Schüppstuhl, head of IFPT, and their teams, are keeping their fingers crossed for approval of the Robo-Hub (NORDHUB), for which they submitted an application within the framework of the German Federal Government’s High-Tech Agenda for the “AI Robotics Booster.” The goal of this BMFTR-funded initiative is to bring learning systems – such as humanoid robots or drones – more quickly from cutting-edge research into industrial application. “We want to create a domain-specific robotics test environment for critical infrastructure and cooperate with the surrounding industries from shipbuilding, aircraft construction, and the energy sector. We have many safety-relevant aspects here – something not many locations in Germany can claim,” the scientist says optimistically.

Focus: Human-Machine Interaction

She is generally enthusiastic about research in outdoor robotics since factors like weather, terrain, or climatically challenging conditions always have to be taken into account. “There are endless areas where robots could make people's work easier – in construction, agriculture, waste collection …” Jana Jost is explicitly not concerned with taking away jobs but with relieving people in their work – such as by taking over long distances, heavy loads, or tasks under critical conditions. “The interaction between humans and robots should always feel good,” emphasizes the researcher, for whom human-robot interaction has been especially close to her heart from the start. 

While the five robots in the ITL hall fall into the category of “mobile driving robots,” Jana Jost is particularly looking forward to a newcomer: ADA, the first humanoid robot at ITL, still safely packed in a transport box from China. Her passion lies with robots suitable for human-robot interaction, such as EMILI, a robot that accompanied her professional journey for years even beyond her doctorate. This robot could adjust to the respective human measurements and was controllable via different interactions. “We tested, for example, a brain-computer interface where signals are sent via sensors on the human scalp,” she reports. However, this is still quite error-prone. “Ideally, you would have robots that offer suitable interaction possibilities depending on the respective person.” Because then, all people – regardless of culture, language, disability, or ambient noise – could be relieved.

Female Scientist in a Male-Dominated Environment

As open and appreciative as she perceives the faculty at ITL and TU Hamburg regarding scientific exchange, she also experiences being one of the few women in her field – one of only three permanent female staff members at ITL to date. Generally, promotion of women in Germany still has room for improvement, and the fact that more girls choose STEM subjects does not necessarily mean they pursue a scientific career. Her tip to young female researchers: “Believe in yourself more, apply for jobs even if you meet only 80 percent of the stated requirements, use networks without compromising who you are, and take advantage of mentoring programs by women for women!” The 38-year-old knows from personal experience how inspiring female models in science are and gladly embraces this herself now.
