TU Hamburg is gradually developing its campus into a more sustainable place to learn and live. To this end, a new sustainability governance structure is currently being established, with a Sustainable Campus Council envisaged as its central body in the future. This council is intended to bundle activities, provide strategic impulses, and coordinate the further development of a sustainable campus together with students, staff, and external partners.
Strong student engagement
A defining driver of sustainability transformation at TU Hamburg is the strong commitment of its students. Through the AStA and numerous initiatives, students contribute their own projects and make sustainability visible in everyday campus life — for example through plastic-lid collection campaigns, script-exchange schemes that promote resource-efficient learning, or clean-up activities such as Hamburg räumt auf.
In addition, thematic working groups such as the AG Climate-Neutral TUHH, the Foodsharing AG, the Enerconnecting AG, and the Blue Engineering AG are actively engaged in climate protection, social responsibility, and fostering a sustainable campus community.
Spaces for ideas and implementation
An important place for hands-on implementation is the WorkINGLab, TU Hamburg’s open makerspace. Here, students can carry out repairs, build their own prototypes, or take part in workshops such as bicycle repair courses — directly linking sustainability with technical learning.
Programmes such as University Innovation Fellows also support students in initiating change processes and developing creative solutions for a more sustainable university — for example through design-thinking sprints or projects with a sustainability focus.
Together, these initiatives demonstrate how vibrantly sustainability is already being lived at TU Hamburg today — and the considerable potential the campus offers to jointly advance future-oriented topics.
Sustainability Council at TU Hamburg
The Sustainability Council advises the Executive Board on the targeted further development of sustainability aspects in day-to-day university life. Representatives of all status groups – from students and academic, technical and administrative staff to professors – jointly identify and prioritise concrete measures for a more sustainable campus and support their implementation.

At TU Hamburg, active student engagement plays a key role in advancing sustainability on campus.
Through the Sustainability Officer of the AStA and numerous working groups, students contribute their own ideas and implement a wide range of projects — from food sharing and clean-up activities to initiatives such as the AG Climate-Neutral TUHH, the Enerconnecting AG, and the Blue Engineering AG.
Those who wish to get involved will find many opportunities here to actively contribute and help shape the sustainable development of the campus.

TU Hamburg is continuously working to make its campus more climate-friendly and resource-efficient.
Guided by the strategic focus Engineering to Face Climate Change, the university implements measures that strengthen energy efficiency and sustainable operations — ranging from modern building automation and energy-efficient lighting to optimised heating controls and partnerships for renewable energy.
Renovation measures follow current state-of-the-art standards, with a focus on service life, energy consumption, and sustainable supply systems. Step by step, this is creating a campus that operates in an environmentally responsible, efficient, and future-oriented manner.

The WorkINGLab is the open makerspace for all students at TU Hamburg who wish to realise their own projects, carry out repairs, or simply engage in hands-on, practical activities.
