At the 18th INTERCOH in New Orleans, Markus Witt (PhD-student at Prof. Fröhle’s Institute of River and Coastal Engineering) was presented with the Ray Krone Award for young researchers alongside Elin Schuh (Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute).
The ELMOD* research project focused on an issue of great economic and political significance for Hamburg and its port: dredging and the displacement of sediments are essential in the Elbe, as in many other estuaries, to maintain the navigability of waterways and access to ports. The volumes of sediment deposited there can have a significant impact on long-term morphological development. Targeted, highly complex field measurements carried out during sediment deposition at ‘Neßsand’ in the Elbe estuary yielded valuable data intended to improve the relevant numerical models. Two specially equipped survey vessels monitored the development of the so-called sediment plume on site in several measurement campaigns, whilst a hopper dredger discharged the previously dredged sediment.
Elin Schuh and Markus Witt presented their research in New Orleans through two talks and a poster. Elin Schuh was awarded the Krone Presentation Award for her presentation, whilst Markus Witt received the Krone Poster Award for young researchers for his poster. INTERCOH is the world’s leading conference series for research and research findings on the transport of cohesive sediments.
