Many students took the opportunity to pick up their first-year bag at the Sand market square

Once again, Harburg's market square became a central meeting point for the new generation of students at TU Hamburg. The traditional welcome event not only gave first-semester students the opportunity to get to know each other and gather information, but also offered a special highlight: the free backpack handed out by the university and its partners. At the same time, the event builds a bridge between the university and the district.

Encouraging words for the academic future

Even before the official start, long queues stretched across the square. First conversations were struck up, and at the information stands new students gathered information about the university and the district. Among those represented were Balu und Du e.V., a mentoring programme for primary school children, the Hamburg public transport association (hvv) and the Harburg Volunteer Network.

Alongside District Manager Christian Carstensen and Marcel Corsi of Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude, Prof. Dr. Thorsten Kern, Vice President for Education at TU Hamburg, officially welcomed the newcomers. Despite challenging times and the rapid change in technology and the world of work, Kern encouraged the students to think critically and to have the courage to ask questions.

Coveted first-year bags handed out in record time

The distribution of the coveted backpacks followed, running like clockwork. The sustainable bags were packed with useful giveaways, flyers and vouchers for everyday student life. The contents ranged from practical saddle covers from steg Hamburg mbH and energy balls to vouchers for cultural and sports organisations such as the Harburg Theatre and the Harburg Gymnastics Club. The event was organised by TU Hamburg and the association Harburg Marketing. The project was financially supported by TU Hamburg, TUHH Alumni, Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude, the Phoenix-Center and ContiTech.
