For some bachelor students at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), learning started a little earlier than for others. At the beginning of the 2026 bridging courses, the freshmen took over the campus throughout this week. In Audimax II, Prof. Thorsten Kern, Vice President for Teaching at TUHH, personally welcomed the newcomers: "I warmly invite you to make use of the campus, the open laboratories, and the opportunity to engage with each other and with us instructors. We chose this profession because, alongside scientific expertise and our passion for engineering, we especially want to work with people."
In the bridging courses organized by the Department of Studies and Teaching, the freshmen receive an intensive crash course in mathematics and computer science to provide optimal preparation for their studies. The mathematics courses cover all essential fundamentals, from basic arithmetic rules through functions to discrete mathematics. At the same time, the computer science courses teach elementary programming skills. Under the supervision and guidance of tutors, the students also install the required development software directly. A nice side effect of voluntary participation: students can familiarize themselves early with the campus atmosphere and already establish first contacts with their new fellow students.
Student Working Groups Showcase Themselves
In addition to an introduction to the central IT systems by the computing center, a first academic challenge awaited the newcomers from the Department of Subject Didactics in the field of mechanics. Another special highlight was the first campus exhibition in Building N, where a variety of student working groups as well as the different learning and advisory services presented themselves.
Participation in one of the total twelve bridging courses is still possible until October 9. The provisional highlight of the orientation weeks will take place on October 5 with the welcome event at the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Harburg. Here, all new bachelor students will also be officially welcomed to TU Hamburg.
