Two long-standing partners are deepening their cooperation: On the campus of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), the university board of TU Hamburg and that of Leuphana University of Lüneburg met for a joint meeting.
After a welcome by the hosts and TUHH President Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel, the current status of the cooperation was first reviewed. A bilateral cooperation agreement between the two universities has existed since 2017. Among other things, it enables students of both institutions to attend courses at the partner university beyond their own degree program.
The latest milestone of the cooperation is the new joint project "Impact Engineering for a Sustainable World." In summer 2026, Leuphana and TUHH were able to secure joint funding of around €3.5 million from the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education. The focus is on developing a joint, English-language pilot bachelor's degree program that combines technological solution development with societal design competence. At the recent meeting on the TUHH campus, the previously developed results were built upon, and the next concrete steps for the pilot degree program were discussed. The program is planned to start in the winter semester 2028/29.
Other important topics of the meeting included the use of artificial intelligence in teaching as well as the continuing education offerings of both universities. In both areas, TUHH and Leuphana aim to further connect with their complementary competencies. In addition to regular exchanges at the operational level, the representatives emphasized the importance of joint meetings of the presidiums also for the future.

It is precisely at these interfaces that new solutions can emerge – for example, for the circular economy and sustainability in line with our guiding principle 'Engineering to Face Climate Change.' At the same time, we can also learn a lot from each other in innovative teaching formats. The joint bachelor's degree program is a first major success of this cooperation and shows the potential it holds.”
