The EU program Erasmus+ has reached a historic milestone: Since its inception in 1987, one million students from Germany have gone abroad for study or internship stays supported by Erasmus+. This was announced by the National Agency for Erasmus+ Higher Education Cooperation at the German Academic Exchange Service (NA DAAD) in Bonn. With a social media campaign titled “One in One Million,” the NA DAAD celebrates the success story of the European exchange program at German universities.
As part of the OneInOneMillion campaign, TU Hamburg has nominated the student Maike Eisele as a representative, who completed an Erasmus+ semester this year at Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania. Ms. Eisele (Master’s in Energy Engineering) on her choice of a somewhat less frequented destination country: “The main reason for my choice was […] that I absolutely wanted to go to a place where I had never been before. […] Looking back, the semester abroad in Lithuania was a great experience. I had a wonderful time and met many amazing people from all over the world. The country itself pleasantly surprised me and was simply ideal as a starting point for travels.”
As a small token of appreciation from NA DAAD, she was presented with a certificate and an Erasmus+ bag containing various small items that students will surely find useful. “We are pleased to be part of Erasmus+, enabling students from our university to participate in exchanges and to contribute to this remarkable figure,” said Marina Leß, Head of the Outgoing Team in the International Affairs Department.
TU Hamburg has been accredited as an Erasmus university since the start of the Erasmus program in 1987 and currently supports about 120 students per academic year. Particularly popular host countries among the students are the Scandinavian countries Sweden, Norway, and Finland, followed by Italy and Portugal. The Schools of Mechanical Engineering and Management Sciences and Technology have the largest share of outgoing students.
With this nationwide joint success in Germany, Erasmus+ asserts its position as a key program for an open, connected, and sustainable Europe.
