The awarding of the Deutschlandstipendium has a tradition at TU Hamburg. However, the scholarship program has never been as successful as it was this year: At a ceremonial event in Audimax I, scholarships were awarded to a total of 150 students (80 bachelor’s and 70 master’s students). A new record for the university.
The Deutschlandstipendium brings together companies, foundations, and private individuals, along with the federal government, to support committed and talented students. The concept of achievement for this interdisciplinary scholarship is deliberately broad. Above-average grades and academic performance are one aspect. Other criteria include, for example, the willingness to take responsibility for others or successfully overcoming obstacles in one's life and educational path. Like Sobair Saheem, a TU student in Industrial Engineering and a scholarship holder with an Afghan migration background. “As the first academic in my family, I am taking a path for which there are no family models,” says Saheem. “But that is precisely what motivates me to achieve more and bring out the best in myself.”
The Deutschlandstipendium was first awarded at TU Hamburg in 2016. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary, the Vice President for Education, Prof. Thorsten Kern, now gave an entirely positive review during the ceremonial event. “In total, 956 young people have been and can benefit from this support,” says Prof. Kern. “956 individuals who, with great commitment, courage, and excellence, follow their own paths and make use of the opportunities the Deutschlandstipendium opens up for them.”
TUHH ranks among the top in Hamburg
“In proportion to the number of students, TUHH achieved a top position in Hamburg this year and is more successful nationwide compared to TU Munich,” Kern continued.
The Deutschlandstipendium not only provides students with financial support for one year but also offers access to a network of mentors and supporters. One of the sponsors is the traditional Hamburg-based company Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co. GmbH & Co. KG. “As an innovative family business, supporting young talent is especially important to us,” says Managing Director Michael O. Grau. “The Deutschlandstipendium supports committed students in realizing their goals and motivates them to actively shape the future – exactly what we at Mankiewicz value and promote.”
