What began two years ago with the signing of an agreement between Hamburg University of Technology and the United Nations University (UNU-INWEH) as part of the UNU Hub “Engineering to Face Climate Change” is now bearing fruit in the form of two joint degree programmes.

Connecting Engineering Education with Global Challenges

How can engineering solutions help address the challenges of climate change? What role do research, international collaboration and science-based policymaking play in shaping a sustainable future?

The UNU Hub “Engineering to Face Climate Change” at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) addresses these questions through two joint educational programmes developed in collaboration with the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).

The programmes complement TUHH's existing Master's and doctoral education by integrating international research perspectives, UN-related learning opportunities and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Joint Master's Programme: Climate-Informed Engineering and Sustainability Transitions

The Joint UNU–TUHH MSc Programme is designed for students enrolled in TUHH's English-language Master's programme in Environmental Engineering.

It focuses on climate-informed engineering, sustainability transitions and the role of technical solutions in addressing global environmental and societal challenges.

Alongside their regular degree requirements, participating students complete selected courses aligned with the UNU Hub's thematic priorities, UN online courses and an applied activity. Their Master's thesis is jointly supervised by TUHH and an academic expert from the UNU or wider UN system.

Upon successful completion, participants receive a UNU-INWEH certificate in Climate-Informed Engineering and Sustainability Transitions, in addition to their TUHH Master's degree.

The programme is integrated into the existing Environmental Engineering MSc curriculum and is designed not to extend the regular duration of study.

Joint PhD Programme: Engineering to Face Climate Change

The Joint UNU–TUHH PhD Programme provides doctoral researchers at TUHH with an opportunity to connect their research to international scientific collaboration and practical approaches to climate change and sustainability.

A central feature is joint supervision by a TUHH professor and an academic expert from the UNU or wider UN system. Participants also engage in UN-related learning opportunities and develop research outputs that can contribute to international knowledge exchange and evidence-informed decision-making.

Upon successful completion, doctoral researchers receive a UNU-INWEH certificate in Engineering to Face Climate Change, alongside their TUHH doctoral degree.

Building Bridges Between Research, Education and Sustainable Development

Both programmes combine TUHH's engineering expertise with the international networks and applied knowledge of the United Nations University.

By bringing together academic research, interdisciplinary learning and global perspectives, the UNU Hub creates opportunities for students and doctoral researchers to strengthen their scientific skills, develop international connections and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
