For his outstanding master’s thesis, Fritz Arnold Engeln, M.Sc., was awarded third place in the 2026 Hamburg VDI Prize. The award ceremony took place on August 19 as part of the summer festival hosted by the Hamburg chapter of the Association of German Engineers (VDI).

Engeln wrote his master’s thesis on the topic “Physics-informed data-driven predictive control.” The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Timm Faulwasser, head of the Institute for Control Systems at the Hamburg University of Technology.

The thesis falls within the research field of modern data-based control methods. It combines physical system knowledge with information derived from data for the predictive control of technical systems.

With the Hamburg VDI Prize, VDI Hamburg annually honors young engineers for particularly outstanding bachelor’s and master’s theses. The theses are nominated by universities in the Hamburg district association’s catchment area and subsequently evaluated by a selection committee.

We offer our congratulations on this award.
