He heads one of the most renowned universities in all of India. Now Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, has visited the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). He was welcomed by President Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel, Vice President for Education Prof. Thorsten Kern and Dr. Wang Yi, Head of the International Affairs department. Afterwards, the guest visited, among other things, the Cluster of Excellence BlueMat – Water-Driven Materials as well as the CampusLab "Circular Economy".

Prof. Suman Chakraborty: “I was delighted to visit the TUHH and to engage in extremely productive discussions with the President, the leadership and the university's scientific teams. Our talks resulted in a shared vision to establish a unique bilateral partnership encompassing the entire deep-tech ecosystem – from science and fundamental research to innovation, entrepreneurship, startup incubation and practical societal application.”

More than 200 technology startups created

TUHH President Prof. Timm-Giel: “The discussions with Prof. Suman Chakraborty showed how well IIT Kharagpur and the Hamburg University of Technology complement each other. Both institutions stand for excellent engineering research and for the ambition to turn it into concrete solutions for industry and society. We want to give these initial points of contact more concrete form with a Memorandum of Understanding – in scientific exchange, in student mobility and in particular in technology transfer, in spin-offs and international deep-tech innovations, also in interplay with the TechCity.”

IIT Kharagpur was founded in 1951 and is the oldest and largest of the more than 20 Indian Institutes of Technology in total. Especially in fields such as artificial intelligence, clean energy and advanced manufacturing, IIT Kharagpur enjoys an excellent reputation both nationally and internationally. The institution, with its current roughly 18,000 students, has already produced more than 200 technology startups.
