The long-standing student exchange between Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and the prestigious North American universities, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Waterloo, successfully continues this year. The University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Waterloo are among the leading universities in North America. The partnerships with TUHH have existed for over 30 years.
Starting this autumn, TUHH master’s students Anna Sophia Schmid (Renewable Energies), Henrik Berkmann (Mechatronics), Niklas Göschel, and Mattes Rix (both Theoretical Mechanical Engineering) will spend two semesters at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of UC Berkeley. The University of Waterloo welcomes TUHH master’s students Louis Hehemann (Renewable Energies), Christopher Dallmann (Energy Engineering), Felix Willamowius (Aerospace Engineering), Janina Rogge, and Katharina Krebber (both Civil Engineering) for two trimesters this year. The stay of TUHH students in North America is funded by DAAD scholarships as part of the ISAP program.
A lively exchange in both directions is a central element for obtaining DAAD funding. Since 2015, CYLAD Consulting has enabled stays of University of California students at TUHH through scholarships. This year, TUHH and CYLAD Consulting celebrate the 10th anniversary of this funding partnership. So far, more than 20 inbound students from North America have been supported – and more than 80 TUHH students have been able to spend a year at the partner universities in return during this period. Currently, Joanne Lee from UC Berkeley is visiting TUHH within this cooperation for a three-month research stay in the field of underwater soft robotics.
CYLAD Consulting’s commitment is based on the initiative of Dr. Steffen Petersen, who is himself an alumnus of TUHH and this exchange program. To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of this partnership, a ceremony was held at the Institute of Mechanics and Ocean Engineering. After welcoming addresses from TUHH President Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel and the Head of Exchange Programs, Prof. Robert Seifried, a certificate was presented to Dr. Petersen to commemorate this anniversary. In addition to the farewell of the current outbound students, experiences were exchanged and expectations regarding studying abroad were actively discussed by all participants.
