The 21st Hamburg Construction Day took place at the Hamburg University of Technology, making it a fixture in the annual calendar. The event on the Schwarzenberg campus once again provided a platform for exchange between students, scientists, and construction professionals—this time with a special focus on the challenges that climate change poses for coastal and flood protection.
In two specialist presentations, experts provided insights into current strategies and measures: Dr. Jacobus Hofstede from the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment, and Nature reported on the effects of the storm surge in October 2023 and the resulting concepts for coastal protection on the Baltic Sea coast. Morten Klöpper from the Hamburg Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Agriculture presented the plans and implementations for flood protection in the Hamburg metropolitan region.
As in previous years, the future prospects for the construction industry and university education in civil engineering were also discussed. The event was organized by the Student Council for Civil and Environmental Engineering and, this year, by the Institute of River and Coastal Engineering under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Fröhle, in cooperation with the Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein Construction Industry Association.
With a company contact fair for the construction industry
Accompanying the lecture program, numerous companies, authorities, and engineering firms once again presented themselves in a trade exhibition on campus. Among others, Sweco, Hochtief, Sellhorn Ingenieurgesellschaft, Hamburg Port Authority, Eggers, Zech, Vössing Ingenieure, Bauingenieure für Hamburg e. V. and the Authority for Urban Development and Housing were represented.
During the event, outstanding achievements were once again honored by the Hamburg Construction Industry Foundation. Kaja Ondruch (Numerical investigations into the cyclic load behavior of anchors in floating offshore wind turbines) and Daniel Tetla (On the reinforcement of shore embankments) were honored for their master's theses.
The prizes in the bachelor's degree category went to Johann Christiansen and Janina Rogge for their outstanding academic achievements.
