The work took six months, and now the moment had finally arrived. The extensively redesigned pond complex in the heart of the Hamburg University of Technology campus was officially inaugurated.

The event was hosted by Chancellor Arne Burda, Prof. Bernd-Christian Renner, member of the Academic Senate, as well as Juliane Weihs, Head of the Facility Management Department, and Valbone Scharfenberg, Head of Infrastructural Real Estate Management. Together, the four of them released the first approximately 100 fish into the pond in a symbolic act.

Mussels purify the water

The pond system, with its 238,000 liters of water, will become home to a total of around 400 fish, including gudgeon, bitterling, and goldfish species such as Shubunkin and Sarasa. Extensive renovation work was carried out in advance to prepare for this. Pumps and pipes were replaced, the pond bed was adjusted, and the green space surrounding the pond was redesigned.

All measures are aimed at the renaturation of the area and sustainability. Over the coming weeks, the pond will welcome additional new inhabitants. These will include snails, which naturally control algae growth, as well as mussels, which will perform an important filtering function in the water.
