What opportunities are there for going abroad? Where is what on campus? And how exactly does external funding work? New doctoral students at TU Hamburg have many questions. The most important ones were answered at the traditional event series “WiMis GettING Started” organized by the Graduate Academy.

The research associates who will be doing their doctorates at TUHH in the coming years were welcomed with a colorful program. The goal is to introduce the new members of TUHH to the structures and contact persons in various departments of the university.

This event takes place twice a year. For the “Spring” event in the summer semester, over 60 participants gathered in room 0.001 in building B. There, they attended presentations from representatives of the International Affairs Department, University Sports, and the Equal Opportunities Office, among others.

New Contacts Thanks to “Research Pitch Roulette”

The day was moderated by two staff members of the Graduate Academy: the coordinator of the doctoral program Lara Walkling and managing director Dr. Krista Schölzig. “The kick-off,” said Schölzig, “provides new doctoral candidates with concise insights into the areas important for their doctoral studies and work as research associates. Moreover, it offers an excellent opportunity for collegial networking beyond the boundaries of institutes.”

TUHH President Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel and Vice President for Research Prof. Irina Smirnova also emphasized in their welcoming addresses how important it is not only to know one’s own research project but to experience TUHH as a whole. This idea was put into practice shortly after during the “Research Pitch Roulette”: all participants were randomly distributed into equally sized groups. Each person then had one minute to present their work to the others and one more minute to answer questions. After that, the groups rotated.

Later, everyone set off on a campus rally. Stops included the University Library, the Electron Microscopy Service, and the Northern Institute of Technology Management (NIT). The eventful day ended with a final get-together, where further contacts could be made. The next “WiMis GettING Started” event will take place on November 20.
