BACKROUND:
Manually produced butt welds, as they often appear at block joints in shipbuilding, have distortions like angular and axial misalignment. Tolerances are defined in regulations like “Production Standard of German Shipbuilding Industry”, but for a plate thickness below 6 mm hard to fulfill.

This investigation is about manual weldings at block joints with a plate thickness of 4 mm. The test objects were produced under realistic conditions. The intention is proving sufficient fatigue behaviour of this detail.

Until now no damages have been reported at such structures. Nevertheless it is necessary to investigate the influence of misalignments at thin plates. It can be assumed that in future such structures will be increasingly used in shipbuilding. A validated background for dimensioning is essential and to be made available here.
