Sustainable Process Design Project

This module gives students the chance to work in teams on the development or intensification of sustainable production processes. The lecture (1 SWS) provides an introduction to the general problems of plant design, followed by project-related lectures. The focus of the module is on project-oriented group work (3 SWS).

Students can choose between two exciting challenges:

  • Process Intensification for a Biodiesel Process – Starting from a basic flowsheet and simulation model, students explore technical and economic improvements through suitable intensification strategies.

  • Design of a Sustainable Production Process (EURECHA Competition) – In larger teams, students develop and evaluate an innovative process concept based on the annual EURECHA challenge of the EFCE. Extended project time and institute support enable participation in this international competition, also offered as an ECIU Challenge. Participation in the EURECHA challange offers the possibility to be awarded with a price from the EFCE CAPE party, who invites the winning teams to one of the annual international conferences, such as the ESCAPE conference and the CAPE Forum, so that there is an opportunity to be recognized far beyond the scope of the actual module.

Note: Some prior knowledge of process simulation software (e.g. from the module Process Simulation and Safety) is recommended and at least required for some team members.

Assessment: group report, presentation, and discussion. For EURECHA projects, the report serves as the basis for the competition submission.

The module is offered in the following study programs:

      • Process Engineering (M.Sc.) – General / Chemical Process Engineering

      • Bioprocess Engineering (M.Sc.) – General Bioprocess Engineering

      • Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering (M.Sc.)

      • Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering (International M.Sc.) – all specializations

Additionally, through the ECIU Challenge, students from the University of Twente (Netherlands) and TU Lodz (Poland) can also participate.

      Module description

StudIP - Sustainable Process Design Project (winter term 25/26)

The module ‘Sustainable Process Design Project’ is currently undergoing further development and will be open for the first time this year to students from twelve European universities participating in the EU project ECIU University. More information about the TUHH in the ECIU University project can be found here: tuhh.de/eciu

As students from other universities do not have access to StudIP, we will be using the engage platform and the MS Team of the ECIU University project for group work, data exchange and collaborative work. You can find our course there via the link: https://engage.eciu.eu/challenges/aff99bb4-df78-f011-b4cb-6045bd8ecf60

Please register for the module by 9 October 2025 at the latest by clicking on the ‘Apply’ button. To do so, you will need to register once. After registering, you will receive an eciu email address and access to MS Team. You can also use this address to register for all other offers on the engage platform. Registration is only possible if you provide your tuhh email address. Step-by-step video instructions for registration (along with other information about what you can do with an eciu registration) can be found at https://www.tuhh.de/eciu/startseite/an-eciu-learning-opportunities-teilnehmen. On this page, you will also find the project team that can help with technical problems with registration.
