Award for work on radar for medical applications

The IEEE Microwave Application Award goes to Prof. Alexander Kölpin in 2025
[Translate to English:] Prof. Alexander Kölpin, Preisträger IEEEMicrowave Application Award

Prof. Kölpin receives the IEEE Microwave Application Award from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society for “OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO INTERFEROMETRIC RADAR TECHNOLOGY FOR MEDICAL APPLICATIONS.”

Alexander Kölpin and his team have been working on interferometric radar technology for more than 15 years. Kölpin's area of expertise is medical technology. His doctoral students have published more than 100 papers on the subject to date. In the past, they have won all six student design competitions in the field of high-resolution radar in which they have competed. In addition, they have received several Best Paper Awards for their publications.

The group with the Institute for High-Frequency Technology of TU Hamburg can be described as pioneers. They are probably the first to be able to measure acoustic heart sounds in humans using radar. And they do so without touching the fully clothed individuals. Interferometric radar technology is able to precisely measure human vital signs without obstructing the patients. I might be a completely new tool for medical monitoring and diagnostics, in the future.

Alexander Kölpin is proud and grateful to his competent young team, "because my award is actually a tribute to the great work of my doctoral students." He will receive the award in June 2026 at the International Microwave Symposium in Baltimore, USA.

The Microwave Award is presented annually by the IEEE. Prof. Kölpin is only the fourth German winner in the 50-year history of the award.
