Damien Toquer from the Laboratoire de Physique de l'Ecole normale supérieure (LPENS) visits the CRC "SMART Reactors"

The guest from Paris/France gave an inspiring talk on "Electrostatic interactions and ionic transport in nanoconfined systems – Insights from numerical simulations".

In his seminar Damien Toquer presented that recent advances in nanofluidics have revealed that electrostatic interactions between ions and confining walls significantly influence ion transport through molecular-scale pores, with ion correlations enhanced by electric field confinement leading to phenomena such as ionic pairing and suppressed conduction at low voltages. These strong correlations also give rise to collective charge fluctuations that can couple with plasmonic modes in solids, affecting flow transport properties and enabling potential applications in ionic memristors, ion separation, and desalination through engineered solid surfaces.
