Elfenwiese School Visits TUHH

19 students from Elfenwiese School visited TUHH and took part in a rally featuring hands-on experiments, prepared by students and staff. From the raisin “submarine” experiment to the popcorn machine, they gained exciting insights into research and university life. Photo: TU Hamburg / Stoll

Since October 2025, the ECIU (European Consortium of Innovative Universities) and Elfenwiese School have been working together in a collaborative project organized by the WorkINGLab, the Institute of Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering, and the Kinderforscher initiative. Following an exciting rally at Elfenwiese School, the students visited TUHH in return to take part in a rally prepared by the Challenge’s students and staff.

A total of 19 students, accompanied by four teachers, explored the campus in three groups, rotating through interactive stations designed to highlight the real-world applications of scientific experiments. In the WorkINGLab foyer, they observed raisins rising and sinking in sparkling water to understand the principles behind a submarine. In the CampusLab, hands-on activities included examining dye-soaked sponges under a microscope to demonstrate the importance of standing for joint health, even for wheelchair users, and a compressed-air sand experiment illustrating how sand and embedded objects behave under strong airflow. The final and much-celebrated stop was a popcorn machine at the Institute of Solids Process Engineering and Particle Technology, where fresh popcorn marked the perfect ending to the rally.

Along the way, the students also learned about different fields of study and career paths at TUHH, asking thoughtful questions and engaging enthusiastically with the activities. As a special keepsake, the group received their photo laser-engraved, along with each student’s name. All participants were delighted with the experience and are already looking forward to the final event next Tuesday.
