Lena Metauge: Power in discourses using the example of the BDA technology discourse in Germany (Master's thesis)

The development of new technologies such as big data analytics (BDA) is a highly charged topic and the economic potential and social risks are often controversially discussed in public discourse. The master's thesis deals with the question of which actors are involved in the BDA technology discourse, what roles they play and how they exert power on the discourse through this role.

"I enjoyed my Master's thesis on technology discourses because it combined technical aspects of my studies with scientific questions and at the same time made the connection to business decisions. I recommend writing your thesis at ISIM because, on the one hand, you have a lot of freedom for research and to set your own focus for your thesis, but on the other hand, you also receive excellent support with any questions or obstacles."

Jannis Linke: The strategic importance of big data and analytics - An analysis of selected management speeches on the topic of big data analytics (Master's thesis)

The strategic importance of big data & analytics is often proclaimed as a given, but in reality the strategic importance is only gradually constructed as companies launch strategic initiatives, go through learning processes and share their experiences with the public in order to gain legitimacy. This construction of strategic importance can be traced in particular in management speeches by top managers who share their experiences with the public. The master's thesis deals with the discourse construction of the topic of big data and the implications this has for strategic issues and theories (including resource and competition-oriented strategies).

"The topic is exciting because of its topicality and the bridge between theory and practice, as I analyzed management speeches from Dow Jones companies. The work as well as the mentoring and learning relationship at ISIM also helped me beyond my degree, because I was able to use the findings both in the corporate world and for applying for a doctoral position."

Paula Seibt: Technology Responsibility as Self-Regulation: The Example of the Corporate Digital Responsibility Initiative of the BMJ (Master thesis)

Technology responsibility moves between regulation by German and European laws (e.g. the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR) and self-regulation by companies that create voluntary guidelines for the responsible use of technology in order to meet the expectations of customers and society as a whole. One example is the Corporate Digital Responsibility Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Justice (BMJ), in which various companies have developed a code of voluntary self-responsibility together with the ministry. This form of self-regulation represents a new approach to dealing responsibly with emerging technologies, which is examined in the master's thesis.

"My master's thesis on technological responsibility as self-regulation deals with how companies can voluntarily assume responsibility in times of digital transformation in order to stay one step ahead of their competitors. I was particularly interested in the connection between the practical impressions from the CDR initiative of the Federal Ministry of Justice and the scientific aspects of the literature. The work fitted in with my studies in International Engineering, as it places the importance of society at the heart of digitalization and thus demonstrates its influence."
