Development of a mobile system for automated quality control in the cabin

The project partners are working together to achieve the most automated and complete digitization of the aircraft cabin possible, i.e., taking many individual photos that are then merged into a model. This requires selecting suitable cameras and other necessary sensors. To achieve high image quality, a kinematic system is being developed that allows the sensors to be systematically guided through the aircraft cabin. Based on the high-quality data, AI models can be trained to detect anomalies. Possible application scenarios for the system include, for example, aircraft manufacturers who want to inspect the cabin during the assembly process or, in particular, before handing it over to the customer in order to detect any damage at an early stage and derive complete and traceable documentation. Possible damage that could lead to customer complaints includes, for example, dirt, scratches on surfaces, gap dimensions, or incorrectly assembled components.

In this project, the IFPT is focusing on defining the requirements and ensuring meaningful measurement coverage. Furthermore, the IFPT is developing the kinematic concepts up to a physical kinematic demonstrator, which allows the sensor technology to be moved through the cabin and thus validates the entire targeted pipeline.

The project will run for two years until the end of 2026. The close cooperation between the project partners is expected to result in a powerful demonstrator. In addition to discussions with companies in the industry, this should help the partners gain interesting market access for the new technology.
