Inland navigation stands as the most energy-efficient mode of transport and is the only one with sufficient capacity reserves to accommodate growing freight demands. To address challenges such as shortages of skilled labor and shifts toward smaller cargo volumes, innovative automation solutions for ships are under development that also increase competitiveness to other means of transport. The presentation gives an insight into current research of the DST and its partners.
