Managing the Complexity of Organisational Transformation Towards a Circular Economy:

Insights from Northern European Manufacturing Organisations

This dissertation explores how organisations manage the change process to a Circular Economy (CE) through a paradox lens. While the CE offers a sustainable alternative to linear models, its implementation creates ongoing tensions. Based on an integrative literature review, a semi-structured interview study, and a multiple-embedded case study with actors of Northern European manufacturing firms, the study develops a holistic, non-linear change model. Findings highlight the need to navigate, not resolve, tensions - leveraging them as drivers of innovation. The research contributes to theory and practice by deepening the understanding of circular transformation and offering guidance for navigating paradoxical challenges.
