The current facts

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kaltschmitt, professor at the Institute for Environmental Technology and Energy Economics (IUE), has announced his early retirement (as of March 31, 2026). This will have a major impact on the modules offered by this institute. However, it has not yet been finalized whether and how the modules will continue from the coming summer semester onwards.

General information

What will happen to the modules led by Kaltschmitt?

The modules will still take place as usual in the current semester, as will the corresponding exams. It is not yet clear whether there will be replacement modules or alternative lecturers in the 2026 summer semester.

Do I have to take all the exams administered by the IUE now?

No, the exams can be retaken for at least another four semesters. Only the courses for the respective modules may not take place.

Will there be replacement modules starting in the summer semester?

That has not yet been decided.

Will I be able to complete my degree program?

Yes, the TU is legally obliged to ensure this. How this can be achieved has not yet been determined.

Green Technologies

Will the Energy Systems specialization now be discontinued?

That has not yet been decided. The exams for the corresponding modules can still be taken for another four semesters.

Would it make sense to drop out of my studies?

No! There is still far too little known about how things will proceed. It's better to wait and see and continue studying as before.

I am studying energy systems in depth in order to switch to the Master's program in Renewable Energies (REMS).

Maybe take a look at this.

IUE

Is the IUE closing?

As of November 5, 2025, the institute is not scheduled to close.

Can I still do my thesis at the IUE?

Yes, theses can still be supervised.
