I³ProTeachING is TU Hamburg’s flexible, teaching focused training programme. It was initiated by the University Board in 2019 to ensure high-quality teaching and to support student learning in the best possible way. Over the course of 60 hours and within a maximum of two years, academic staff in mid-level faculty positions receive further training in an individualised, networked, needs-based, evidence-informed, and practice-oriented way. The programme includes an initial talk, hands-on workshops, accompanying elements such as reflection, peer visits, and a teaching project, as well as a celebrating closing event – all coordinated by the Centre for Teaching and Learning in cooperation with the Graduate Academy.

Participants’ commitment to the programme is recognised with the I³ProTeachING Certificate, which is acknowledged in the Graduate Academy’s doctoral supplement.
Structure of (My) I³ProTeachING
I³ProTeachING comprises 60 hours to be completed over a maximum of two years. It includes an initial talk (1 hour), workshops (24 hours, selectable from a catalogue), three accompanying elements (21 hours for the teaching project, 9 hours for the peer visit, and 3 hours for reflection), as well as a final event (2 hours). Twice a year, in April and October, the Vice President for Education invites academic staff in mid-level faculty positions to join the programme. A final event also takes place every six months under the Vice President’s patronage, celebrating the participants’ achievements.
Participants put together their own individual I³ProTeachING programme, guided by a suggested one-year schedule. This schedule is discussed during the initial meeting. Participants document their progress in the programme themselves using the My I³ProTeachING checklist, available in Mattermost.
Support
Participants are supported by the I³ProTeachING team:
Marisa Hammer (I³ProTeachING advisor for the Schools of M and T)
Ulrike Bulmann (I³ProTeachING advisor for the Schools of B and E)
Nadine Stahlberg (I³ProTeachING advisor for the School of V)
Stephanie Wichmann (I³ProTeachING advisor for the School of W)
Participants have three standard meetings with their I³ProTeachING advisor:
Initial talk (for summer intake: May, for winter intake: November)
Final meeting (for summer completions: April; for winter completions: October)
Additional meetings can be arranged as needed – particularly for detailed planning of the pedagogical concept, initial implementation, evaluation design, or discussing results.
Communication within the group and about individual programme elements takes place via Mattermost. There, participants also find introductory information and templates.
Information Session
The one-hour online session provides initial information and offers the opportunity to ask questions directly and meet the new participants. The information session takes place twice a year – in April and in October. After the information session, participants must register for the programme within the specified deadline (see below).
Initial Talk
The initial talk marks each participant’s personal start into the programme. This one-hour meeting is held individually with the I³ProTeachING advisor responsible for the participant’s School. During the conversation, participants define their personal goals based on their interests and experience, and put together their individual I³ProTeachING programme.
We support every teaching personality in growing individually – and beyond.
Workshops
The workshops offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (ZLL) take place on the TU Hamburg campus, online, or in a blended learning format and range from half-day over full-day to one-and-a-half-day sessions.
The workshop “Starting to Teach at TU Hamburg” is a mandatory part of the programme for all participants and provides a shared starting point. In this workshop, participants get to know one another, explore pedagogical principles, discover activating methods and the media used to implement them, gain insight into the teaching culture at TU Hamburg, and get a first taste of various pedagogical topics.
In addition to the introductory workshop, each participant selects further workshops totalling 18 hours based on their individual interests. Up to six of these hours can be covered by ZLL Teaching Appetisers, or by workshops from the catalogue of the Graduate Academy or the ECIU University.
Accompanying Elements
The accompanying elements serve to encourage reflection, peer exchange, and the transfer of what has been learned into teaching practice.
They are structured as follows:
The teaching project is the core of the programme. Projects are completed with the submission of a poster. These are presented not only at the final event but also published under Showcases. In most cases, participants work in pairs to implement a concrete teaching idea in one of their courses. Alternatively, a course can be analysed, or an outstanding teaching example can be made known beyond TU Hamburg. The project teams are supported by their I³ProTeachING advisor through a consultation and a final meeting. Timely registration of the project is required (see below).
The peer visit enables participants to give each other feedback on their concrete teaching practice. Whether related to the methodological implementation of their teaching project or their personal performance as a teacher – constructive feedback at eye level is extremely valuable for developing both teaching and teaching identity. These experiences are reflected upon and documented in a peer visit report to be submitted at the end. Timely registration of the peer visit is required (see below).
The reflection usually takes place during two network meetings, where participants exchange insights on their ongoing teaching projects. Alternatively, reflection can be carried out individually and concluded with a written reflection report.
Final Event
The final event offers space for exchange among participants who completed their teaching project and the full programme in the previous semester. New participants and other guests from TU Hamburg are invited to draw inspiration from the projects presented.
Timely registration for the final event is required (see below).
I³ProTeachING in Numbers: 215 graduates, 122 practical projects, 10 closing events I³ProTeachING Award for Inspiring Teaching: 21 award winners have so far been recognised in the categories of Reflection, Networking, Transfer, and Impact. I³ProTeachING is visible worldwide: Teaching innovations and analyses are presented in the ShowCases. In addition, the I³ProTeachING programme has been discussed and published in the SEFI Proceedings.
