I³ProTeachING

I³ProTeachING is TU Hamburg’s flexible, teaching focused training programme. It was initiated by the University Board in 2019 to ensure high-quality teaching and to support student learning in the best possible way. Over the course of 60 hours and within a maximum of two years, academic staff in mid-level faculty positions receive further training in an individualised, networked, needs-based, evidence-informed, and practice-oriented way. The programme includes an initial talk, hands-on workshops, accompanying elements such as reflection, peer visits, and a teaching project, as well as a celebrating closing event – all coordinated by the Centre for Teaching and Learning in cooperation with the Graduate Academy.

"Teaching can be fun"

Become part of our vibrant teaching community. We celebrate your dedication, recognise your innovative contributions to university teaching, and highlight them as a source of inspiration. Goals and Certificate

With the I³ProTeachING qualification programme, we aim to support participants in developing their teaching competence.

This means they will:

  • explore and discuss pedagogical principles,
  • select and apply methods and media for their teaching,
  • reflect on and further develop their teaching identity,
  • document and present their teaching-related product, and
  • exchange ideas and network across institutes on the topic of teaching.

Participants' commitment to the programme is recognised with the I³ProTeachING Certificate, which is acknowledged in the Graduate Academy's doctoral supplement.

Kick-Off Meeting

Tue, 2 June 2026, 9:00 am–4:00 pm | on campus | Am Schwarzenberg-Campus 2, Room B 0.001 Marisa Hammer, Siska Simon, Nadine Stahlberg, Stephanie Wichmann | Language: English | Duration: 6 hrs

TU Hamburg stands for modern, forward-looking higher education. Those who teach here shape learning environments that foster individual development, encourage interdisciplinary thinking, and prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow. But how can this be achieved in practice? That is precisely what the I³ProTeachING programme supports you with.

Goals and Content

The Kick-Off Meeting lays the foundation for your time in the I³ProTeachING programme. The focus is on orientation: you will get to know the programme and its components, connect with other new participants, and begin to sketch out your personal "My I³ProTeachING".

The event includes, amongst other things:

  • Getting to know fellow participants and networking
  • Overview of the I³ProTeachING programme and its components
  • Introduction to pedagogical principles of teaching and learning
  • Initial reflection and exchange: How do I want to shape my "My I³ProTeachING"?
  • Getting to know innovative teaching projects from graduates and benefiting directly from their experience

Learning Outcomes

After the event, you will be able to describe the I³ProTeachING programme and its structure, explain fundamental teaching and learning principles, and formulate your first ideas for your "My I³ProTeachING".

Methods

A varied mix of interactive plenary formats, small group work, and collegial exchange.

Preparation / What to Bring

Prerequisites

None

Open to participants from outside TU Hamburg: No

The Kick-Off Meeting is a fixed and compulsory part of the I³ProTeachING programme and is open exclusively to new programme participants. It provides the ideal starting point for your development as a teacher at TU Hamburg.

Initial Talk and Support

The Initial Talk marks each participant's individual start into the programme and takes place in June or December, depending on the intake.

This one-hour meeting is held individually with the I³ProTeachING adviser responsible for the participant's School. During the conversation, participants define their personal goals based on their interests and experience, and put together their individual I³ProTeachING programme.

We support every teaching personality in growing individually – and beyond.

I³ProTeachING Team

  • Marisa Hammer: School of E
  • Siska Simon: School of M
  • Nadine Stahlberg: School of V
  • Stephanie Wichmann: Schools of B, T, and W

In addition to the Initial Talk, participants have two further meetings with their I³ProTeachING adviser:

  • Project consultation (for winter semester projects: September; for summer semester projects: March)
  • Final Meeting (for summer completions: April; for winter completions: October)

Additional meetings can be arranged as needed – particularly for detailed planning of the pedagogical concept, initial implementation, evaluation design, or discussing results.

Workshops & Networking

The ZLL's workshops take place on the TU Hamburg campus or online – either as half-day (3 hours) or full-day (6 hours) sessions. Participants attend workshops of their own choosing, totalling at least 18 hours  of which up to 6 hours may have a non-pedagogical focus.

Up to six of these hours can be covered by:

  • ZLL Teaching Appetizers, as well as
  • external workshops, e.g. from the catalogue of the Graduate Academy or ECIU University, and
  • self-study modules from the ZLL and MMKH.

Two consecutive Network Meetings offer the opportunity for reflection and exchange on current teaching projects.

Peer Visit

The Peer Visit enables participants to give each other feedback on their concrete teaching practice – whether related to the methodological implementation of the teaching idea from their Teaching Project or their personal performance as a teacher. Constructive feedback at eye level is extremely valuable for developing both teaching practice and teaching identity. These experiences are reflected upon and documented in a peer visit report to be submitted at the end. Prior registration is required for the Peer Visit to be recognised within the programme.

Teaching Project

The Teaching Project is the centrepiece of the programme. In most cases, participants work in pairs to implement a concrete teaching idea in one of their courses – alternatively, a course can be analysed, or an outstanding teaching example can be made known beyond TU Hamburg.

Projects are completed with the submission of a poster and are both presented at the Final Event and published on the Best Practice page. Prior registration is required for the Teaching Project to be recognised within the programme.

Final Event

The Final Event places the Teaching Projects centre stage: graduates of the programme present their results and engage in conversation with attendees. Newly starting participants and other guests from TU Hamburg are warmly welcome and are invited to draw inspiration from the projects presented.

Graduates are asked to register for the Final Event in time.
