DeepL is an AI-powered translation service from the Cologne-based company of the same name. The service translates texts and documents in over 30 languages and is known for its particularly natural-sounding results. In addition to the translation function, DeepL also offers ‘DeepL Write’, an AI writing assistant that optimises texts in terms of grammar, style and tone. DeepL is available as a web app, desktop application (Windows, macOS), mobile app (iOS, Android) and browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
DeepL can be used directly in your browser at deepl.com – no installation is required. Desktop apps for Windows and macOS, mobile apps for iOS and Android, and browser extensions for Chrome, Edge and Firefox are also available. To use the Pro features (e.g. document translation, glossaries), you need to sign up for a DeepL Pro account. One DeepL Pro licence is available per institute. Each institute nominates one person to receive the licence and translate documents for their colleagues at the institute using DeepL.
TU Hamburg has had the DeepL Education tariff since January 2026. Among other things, the Pro licence offers unlimited text translation, up to 20 document translations per user per month and team-enabled glossaries. If you have any questions about licence distribution, please contact your institute first. If your institute does not yet have a licence, please contact the data centre at servicedesk+webdienste (at)tuhh.de. A limited free version of DeepL is available without registration at deepl.com.
