This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Richard Robson, Susumu Kitagawa und Omar Yaghi for their pioneering work on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). MOF are tiny, porous crystalline compounds that have the ability to absorb gases and other molecules and, in some cases, to break them down. They can be used to obtain water in dry desert regions, filter harmful chemicals from the air, and transport drugs to otherwise inaccessible areas of the body. MOFs also play a role in BlueMat's research work.
Prof. Michael Fröba from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hamburg was invited to comment on the winners' research work in the daily news.
