KL2 – Mechanical Engineering Design 2

Your foundation for clever design.

This module continues the journey started in Mechanical Engineering Design , expanding skills and knowledge towards more complex mechanical systems. Students deepen their understanding of machine elements, learn advanced CAD modelling techniques and work on a comprehensive design project. The combination of lectures, exercises and project-based learning ensures a strong link between theory and practical application – preparing participants for the challenges of modern engineering design.

What can you expect?

  • Building on solid foundations: Progressing from the principles learned in Design Engineering 1 to more advanced design capabilities.
  • Hands-on learning: Project work in teams, from concept sketches to technical drawings and 3D-CAD models.
  • Industry-relevant skills: Applying design rules for strength, materials and manufacturing considerations.
  • Integration of methods: Combining analytical calculations, design guidelines and creativity techniques.
  • Practical experience: Using CAD tools for the creation of assemblies, components and detailed manufacturing documentation.

Content

Lectures
Build on the fundamentals from Design Engineering 1, extending knowledge of mechanics, machine elements, design principle and materials considerations. The focus is on integrating theoretical concepts with practical applications in engineering design.

Exercises
Apply lecture content in calculation tasks and design examples, developing the ability to dimension and evaluate components using established engineering methods.

CAD Introduction Course
Learn the fundamentals of 3D CAD modelling and technical drawing creation according to industry standards.

Mechanical Design Project II (KP2)

The Mechanical Design Project II (KP2) provides a fully hands-on learning experience, allowing students to engage with the entire product development process from concept to completion.

The ISEM variant is part of a long-term vision: developing a fully functional billiard robot. In this project, your team contributes a crucial element to this vision – the design and realisation of a precise mechanical striking unit. From the first concept through CAD design, calculation and manufacturing to testing on the billiard table, you will work through the complete engineering cycle. Using 3D printers, laser cutters and modern design methods, you will produce your own components and refine them in iterative loops. This blend of creativity, technical expertise and practical application leads not only to a functioning component, but also to valuable experience for your professional future – and to a building block for the billiard robot of tomorrow.

The new KP2 variant developed by ISEM is currently being piloted in the Engineering Science degree program and focuses on a strongly practice-oriented approach. At the same time, there is still the German-language version of the Mechanical Design Project II, which is organized by the IPMT.
