KL1 – Mechanical Engineering Design I

Your foundation for clever design.

Mechanical Engineering Design 1 is the introduction to professional design. You will learn how machine components work, how to select and calculate them and how to clearly document technical solutions. The module combines basic knowledge with direct application, you practise on real examples, receive immediate feedback in lectures and exercises and consolidate what you have learned in Mechanical Design Project I.

What can you expect?

The lecture first teaches the basics of machine elements and technical drawing. Building on this, you will deepen the content in interactive formats: The prize-winning latch hook design competition puts you in a real development process with several iterations in which your designs are tested and discussed in plenary. When drawing together in the lecture hall, you put standards and presentation rules into practice. Modern learning units with AI-based avatars supplement the lecture by explaining complex concepts vividly, guiding you through examples and enabling self-paced revision at any time.

The lecture hall exercise follows on directly from the lecture and focuses on practical calculation tasks for the design of machine elements. You will solve tasks independently, discuss solutions and learn how to carry out systematic calculations for technical designs.

In Mechanical Design Project I, you will put your knowledge into practice by creating a complete technical documentation of a mechanical model - including standard-compliant drawings, parts lists, sectional views and dimensions.

Content

The module includes an introduction to design and the representation of technical objects in accordance with applicable standards and the basics of technical drawing. The focus is on machine elements such as detachable connections (screws), shaft-hub connections, rolling bearings, springs, axles and shafts

You will learn the calculation methods for designing these elements and apply them. In the project part, you will create complete technical documentation that includes standard-compliant drawings, parts lists and all relevant illustrations.
