Description

PINGO (Peer Instruction for very large Groups) is a web-based live polling system originally developed at the University of Paderborn and now operated by coactum GmbH. It enables lecturers to run real-time polls in courses of any size – without installation, anonymously, and with a variety of question formats including single and multiple choice, free text, and numerical questions. A free basic version is available upon registration.

Use in teaching

  • Gather opinions PINGO allows lecturers to quickly gauge the mood of a group via real-time polls – students respond anonymously using their smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
  • Collect spontaneous feedback PINGO is well suited for spontaneous knowledge checks and comprehension questions mid-lecture; results are immediately visualised as charts or tag clouds.
  • Encourage reflection Using the Peer Instruction method, students can discuss their arguments after an initial vote and then vote again – promoting deeper thinking and reflection.

For advice on how to use this tool effectively in your teaching, please contact Stephanie Wichmann from the ZLL.

Technical requirements

No installation is required for lecturers or students; an internet connection and a current web browser are sufficient. Lecturers need a free account at pingo.coactum.de. Students participate anonymously via an access code or QR code and do not need their own account. A mobile view for smartphones is available.
