Description

H5P (HTML5 Package) is free and open-source software that can be used to create interactive learning content for the web without any programming knowledge. The spectrum ranges from interactive videos and presentations to quizzes and cloze texts to timelines, memory games and drag-and-drop exercises. H5P content can be integrated into existing platforms such as ILIAS, WordPress or Moodle and can be used on all devices.

Use in teaching

  • Presentation With the ‘Course Presentation’ content type, you can create interactive slide sets that embed quiz questions, videos and texts directly into the presentation.
  • Visualisations Content types such as ‘Image Hotspots’ or ‘Interactive Video’ allow you to present complex concepts visually and interactively.
  • Design interactive videos With ‘Interactive Video,’ you can insert quiz questions, additional information or jump marks at any point in the video so that students can actively work with the video material.
  • Set learning tasks A wide range of task types such as multiple choice, cloze texts, matching exercises or drag-and-drop enable varied task design.
  • Create interactive learning elements Over 50 content types are available and can be flexibly combined – from simple quiz questions to complex learning scenarios.
  • Create interactive graphics With ‘Image Hotspots’ or ‘Find the Hotspot’, you can add clickable areas to images and graphics that contain further information or tasks.
  • Provide self-testing Students can use H5P quizzes and exercises to check their learning progress independently and receive direct feedback on their answers.

Stephanie Wichmann from the ZLL will be happy to advise you on the didactic use of the tool.

Technical requirements

H5P is web-based and works with all common browsers – no software installation is required. H5P requires a host system and can be integrated as a plugin into platforms such as ILIAS, WordPress or Moodle. Alternatively, H5P content can be created offline using the free desktop application Lumi and exported as an HTML file.
At the TUHH, H5P is integrated as a plugin in ILIAS.

Costs

The H5P software is free of charge and is licensed under the MIT licence. Use via platforms such as ILIAS or WordPress is also free of charge. The commercial hosting service H5P.com is subject to a fee after a 30-day trial period – however, this is not required for use at the TUHH.

Data protection

GDPR-compliant Open Source RZ-Hosting

When integrated into the university's own systems (e.g. ILIAS), H5P content is processed and stored on the TUHH servers. The software itself does not collect any personal data. When using external platforms such as h5p.org or h5p.com, the data protection regulations of those platforms must be observed.
