About Washed Ashore

The Washed Ashore Project is a non-profit, community-based organization with a mission of educating and creating awareness about marine debris and plastic pollution through art. Washed Ashore is a project of The Artula Institute for Arts & Environmental Education,Oregon, USA,  whose mission is to provide opportunities to express and teach environmental issues through the arts.

Under the leadership of Angela Haseltine Pozzi, community members of all ages work together to clean up our beaches and process the debris into art supplies to construct giant sculptures of the sea life most affected by plastic pollution. This has resulted in thousands of pounds of debris removed from local beaches and turned into works of art. These unique art pieces are part of a traveling exhibition that includes educational signage and programs that encourage reducing, refusing, reusing, repurposing and recycling.

Join environmental artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi and the Washed Ashore movement to educate and create awareness of ocean debris and plastic pollution and its effect on marine life species.

The Landfill Harmonic

This is the story of a recycled orchestra born in the poverty stricken community of Cateura, Paraguay where the massive landfill site dominating the area is both a threat to its people and an important resource. Through the guidance of its founder, Favio Chavez and the skills of self-taught instrument maker Cola, trash is turned into music, music which has already travelled around the world uplifting the lives of hopeless young people and increasing awareness around two critical issues: poverty and waste pollution.

In this video, follow the stories of a garbage picker, a music teacher and a group of children from a Paraguayan slum who created a full orchestra out of scrap metal, oil cans, wood and bottle caps.

Landfill Harmonic is a beautiful story about the transformative power of music and the endless possibilities that lay in the creative power born out of necessity.
