Ms. Johanna Bauer
I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from Leipzig University in 2021. My studies there sparked my interest in remote sensing and its applications in environmental research. During my bachelor's thesis, I conducted experimental laboratory research on the detection of microplastic in soil samples using a HySpex hyperspectral scanner. By applying spectral indices, I investigated the potential of hyperspectral imaging to distinguish microplastic from soil.
In 2024, I completed my Master of Science in Environmental Geography and Management at Kiel University. For my master’s thesis, I analysed spatial and temporal patterns of crop growth at an agricultural test site in Lower Saxony, Germany, based on UAV-based multispectral remote sensing data. I used vegetation indices and plant height information derived from digital elevation models to investigate differences in crop growth and the effects of different soil management practices that had been applied over several decades.
After graduating, I worked in the public sector at LGV Hamburg for one and a half years, where I focused on geospatial data standards in the context of digitalisation in planning and building.
In October 2026, I returned to academia and joined the Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics as a PhD student. As part of the EU project SaliNova, I will contribute to the assessment and monitoring of soil salinity across Europe by integrating different data sources with a particular focus on hyperspectral remote sensing data.
